This is rare: Taste Pappy Van Winkle at cost

Eight Row Flint announced that it will buck the tradition of charging astronomical prices for Pappy pours and instead — for one night-only — sell its entire allocation to patrons at-cost.

That doesn’t mean the brown booze comes cheap. Prices will range between $4.47 for a 1.5-ounce pour of Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year to $28.50 for a 1.5-ounce glass of Pappy 23. The event also comes with a few ground rules and stipulations that will be strictly enforced to ensure as many people as possible get a taste.

  • The first 100 customers through the door will receive a wrist band and a number guaranteeing them a 1.5-ounce tasting.
  • Only one serving is allowed per-person.
  • No one can purchase the Pappy for someone else.
Customers can also expect additional bar specials to round off the night of rare booze. The event kicks off December 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Pappy Hour In Music City In September!

96 golden tickets to taste Pappy Van Winkle's rare portfolio of coveted brown liquor with the great grandson of the great Pappy himself.

This special happy hour takes place next month at the Music City Food + Wine Festival, whose organizers are the masters of the slow trickle tease, just now releasing this significant nugget for all the potential buyers and fence sitters.

For many bourbon drinkers, Pappy has been the gold standard. One of the few wheated bourbons, meaning softer wheat is used in place of the bite of rye as the flavor grain, it lends itself to longer aging where rich and mellow flavors seep from the oak barrels and make an exceedingly complex product. When bottles are released, it's a feeding frenzy due to limited production to keep the price at a premium.

If you buy the all-in ticket ($500) or the Sunday day pass ($150), you've got a chance to be one of the lucky 96. But you need to buy that ticket before September 7th, so you can get the super-secret email about how to register for the tasting.

The event itself is Sep. 17-18 on the grounds of the Tennessee State Bicentennial Mall.  For more information on the festival, participating chefs and vendors and tickets, go to musiccityfoodandwinefestival.com.

A bourbon blast in Louisville

Visiting Louisville? Make time for a stop at the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Created in 1999 by the Kentucky Distiller’s Association, the KBT guides you to nine distilleries that offer visitor centers, tours, and tastings. You can learn about bourbon history (dating back to the late 1700s), Congressional rules for calling a whiskey “bourbon,” and vari-ations in the distilling process that create distinct flavors.

Start at the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience on Louisville’s Whiskey Row, where you’ll enjoy a guided tour through museum-quality exhibits before tasting several well-aged bourbons. Nearby is Jim Beam’s Urban Stillhouse, where you can label a bottle and fill it with bourbon that was produced onsite. Five miles from downtown Louisville, Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience offers tours of its Stitzel-Weller distillery, which dates back to 1935.

The rest of the distilleries on the Bourbon Trail are scattered through the rolling hills of central Kentucky. While they’re all within 90 miles of Louisville, the road system and limited visitor hours preclude seeing every one of them in one day. However, limo services offer four-hour and full-day tours focused on a single area.

For example, in one day, you can tour the historic Woodford Reserve distillery, explore the glass and wood-plank visitor center at Wild Turkey, sample bourbon at Four Roses, and sneak a peek at Town Branch’s ultramodern glass-walled distillery. Another day, you can tour the Bardstown region, stopping in at Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam’s American Stillhouse, and Heaven Hill’s Bourbon Heritage Center.

Then top off your trip with an $80 shot of Pappy Van Winkle at KBT-sponsor Old Talbott Tavern.

Bourbon Boom makes bourbon less available

“Twenty years ago we weren’t all that busy and we certainly are busy today,” said Chris Morris, the Master Distiller at Woodford Reserve in Kentucky. “We’re spreading across more than 40 different countries right now.”

The resurgence of cocktails has led to a 315-percent spike in Kentucky bourbon production since 1999. The industry, however, is struggling to keep up. Whiskey needs a few years to age and many distilleries didn’t anticipate today’s demand.

For example, the Buffalo Trace Distillery is suffering from a shortage. Freddie Johnson said the company’s high end brands, like Pappy Van Winkle, need more than 20 years to age.

“The bourbon aging in the warehouse right now is really for the bourbon of tomorrow and the bourbons that were enjoying today is the bourbon of a generation before,” said Johnson.

Because there is not enough Pappy to meet demand, some online liquor stores are re-selling bottles for 10 times their retail value.
“We believe the demand for bourbon is not going away,” said Johnson.

That’s why many distilleries are expanding. Buffalo Trace expects to double capacity within the next eight years while Woodford Reserve just finished a large expansion project. “We have more equipment, more teammates making more whiskey,” said Morris.

The bourbon boom has created an economic ripple effect in Kentucky. Tourism is up as more people visit Kentuckys famous bourbon trail and farmers have more than doubled their growth of corn and rye which are used in bourbons.

Pray to end violence. Food for thought today

With recent tragedies occurring over in the United States this is a good reminder that firearms are much easier then buying some bourbon. Esepcially Pappy Van Winkle. Guns are very cheap & abundant which can be purchased in just minutes with no background check or age verification when buying from private sellers. Bourbon on the other hand, especially Pappy Van Winkle is very regulated and can only be found in small quantities.

Buying Pappy Van Winkle is harder than buying a firearm.

Example of the cost of the high cost for Pappy in bars

The Gamlin Whiskey House located at 326 North Euclid Avenue in St. Louis, MO currently has all the years available for tasting. It won't come cheap though. Rated the best bourbon whiskey in the world by many makes the cost per just a shot of Pappy Van Winkle incredibly high.

Management states it starts at $10 for a 1½ oz shot of the 10 year old rip van winkle. The oldest aged bourbon at 23 years old comes in at a whopping $85!

If you can afford a sample you better not delay. Supply is expected to sell out by the end of May says  Lucas Gamlin. With that kind of demand the price does seems justified.

Pappy Van Winkle Appears in Silicon Valley, again!

If you were watching the hit HBO television show, Siliccn Valley last night you may have caught the glimpse of Pappy Van Winkle cleverly being incorporated into the show. In Season 3, Episode 3, Pappy Van Winkle is shown which you can watch on YouTube.

“We’ve never paid anyone to mention our products and we’ve never given anyone live product,” says Preston Van Winkle, Julian’s son.

This is not the first time Old Pappy has made a guest appearance in Hollywood. Who remembers the movie, The Internship back in 2013 with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn? There is a famous quote in the movie they talk about ordering Pappy an Winkle to celebrate a sale.

I'm so confident we'll close this, I'm ordering the Pappy Van Winkle. It's pricey, but I want to spiritually invest in our success. If you didn't order the Pappy, I'd send you back to the car.

The prized bourbon is featured in other television such as Justified, Crazy Stupid Love, and the CSI: Los Angeles.

Lastly in January 2014, the country super star Luke Bryan even  picked up a dog and named him Pappy according to a tweet of his.

Rumours of Whiskey Shortage

Good whiskey takes time to age. Bourbon, for example, needs at least two years of barrel time before it can be labeled “straight Bourbon.” Most of my favorite Bourbons are aged considerably longer, often closer to six or eight years.

Producers like Buffalo Trace have attempted to manage expectations bout how much Bourbon may be forthcoming in the years ahead.

And in the cool, damp environs of Scotland, whiskies take even longer to mature. There’s a reason that most premium single malts are aged 12 or 18 years before you see them—many for much longer.

In the meantime, we’re quaffing whiskey at an impressive rate. According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS), both Bourbon and single-malt Scotch saw increased sales in 2015. Bourbon volume, along with Tennessee whiskey and rye, is up 5.2%, while single-malt Scotch surged 13%.

The bottom line: We’re not going to run out of whiskey. However, some limited-supply bottlings will be hard to come by while the good stuff ages quietly in warehouses. If all you drink is Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon and 50-year-old, single-malt Scotch, then by all means, panic.

Prohibition on Facebook is a real thing!

Last call on Facebook!?? One of the worst kept secret's in the whiskey community is there are literally dozens of Facebook groups that post sales of bottles and create a secondary market. Today every Facebook Group that included the sale of bottles was terminated. Facebook terms of use regulate and state:
Pages promoting the private sale of regulated goods or services (including firearms, alcohol, tobacco, or adult products) must restrict access to a minimum age of 18.
Which is strange since it does not exactly state that it is illegal. So why did Facebook shut down all the groups of bottle selling? We may never know. Fortunately there are many other secondary markets always available to satisfy your Pappy Van Winkle desires.

In addition to large and growing national and international audiences, the auction house has earned the admiration of local wine connoisseurs by offering them the opportunity to acquire the kinds of scarce and highly sought-after bottles typically not seen outside of major metropolitan hubs like New York or Chicago.  According to the auction house's whisky & fine wine director, Mark Solomon, "Five years ago few collectors had heard of us.  But today we have a strong local following that has been championed by the nationally recognized wine & epicurean scene."

Rest In Peace Pappy :(

Pat Melton (a sheriff) located in Franklin County, Kentucky has announced that all recovered bourbon from the whisky thieves will end up destroyed rather than sold or auctioned for money.

Julian Van Winkle III, the grandson of Julian Pappy Van Winkle Sr. suggested the 28 bottles could of been contaminated or tampered. It is in the best interest of the public and the sheriff respects Van Winkle's wishes. A judge will make he final decision of the whiskey fate once the theft case has run course.
