Buying Pappy In Person
This will require a little bit of luck but can be done with patience. The best time to try is through September to November as Pappy Van Winkle is released once a year in the fall in a very limited allocation to stores world wide. If you live in the United States, preferably outside of a big city, you will have the most luck at scoring a bottle for retail price.
- Call all the liquor stores in the area. Ask them if they have any Pappy, when they think they may get any in, and what their policy is regarding a waiting list. Some chain alcohol stores are first come, first serve. Others, will have a waiting list. Some even hold a raffle or allocate the bottles to their Very Important Customers. Get your name on as many as waiting lists as possible to increase your chances.
- Check Craigslist. You can often buy a bottle on here but will be paying very high prices. eBay does not allow alcohol sales so do not buy anything off there as it is a scam or an empty bottle!
- You can start with the Vendor List on the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery website to find authorized dealers in your area but remember many stores will carry Pappy and not be listed on there.
2017 Pappy Van Winkle Released In Stock
The 2017 PVW has been released and has started showing up in stores nationwide. As of November 1, 2017 users in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Washington D.C have all spotted Pappy Van Winkle in stock. More states are showing up by the day.
Websites that have Pappy for sale onlineAs you will find out quickly, many websites that sell ORVW or PVW are quickly to display "Out of Stock" or "Backordered". Some retailers may still have Pappy Van Winkle for sale at higher prices than the suggested MSRP while others may stagger the release through out the year to ensure repeat customers get a chance at tasting the rare bourbon. You may also order from individuals on a secondary market -- but these bottles purchased from an individual can range from $300 for 10 year Old Rip Van Winkle to $1500 for 23 Year Old Pappy Van Winkle!
Sell your Pappy Van Winkle BourbonCongratulations if you own some! You are one of the lucky few and fortunately for you it has been a constant sellers market for any BTAC (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection), Old Rip Van Winkle or Pappy Van Winkle bottles. If you are not a bourbon drinker or for some reason have a surplus, you will not have a problem with selling. The easiest method would be online listing such as Craigslist, bourbon forums, the comments below, joining Facebook groups, or just gifting it to a friend who may never get a chance to taste it in their life.
Some websites are set up and advertise that they will purchase your Pappy Van Winkle for top dollar. Some of them include iBuyPappy.com, Whiskey-Buyers.com, and SellCellar.com.
WARNING: It can be illegal to sell without a liquor license. Recently some states have begun cracking down on sellers who list alcohol on Craigslist (especially Pappy Van Winkle) and undercover sting operations have made headline news of arrests, fines, and seizures.
